Barnard's Summer in New York is a coed program for high school students who are intellectually prepared for college-level work and will have completed the 10th or 11th grade. We offer three different programs: In our four-week program, participants choose two courses from a variety of topics, while one-week mini-course participants focus on a single subject. Young Women's Leadership Institute students attend workshops and explore the complex relationship between gender and leadership.

Evenings and weekends are packed with organized trips to tourist sights like the Statue of Liberty and Rockefeller Center. You may also catch a film at an outdoor festival, hang out in Central Park, or escape to Jones Beach for a day filled with surf and sun. In short, you'll get an unforgettable taste of your future while experiencing life in the big city.

Courses
Pre-College Program courses are adapted from the Barnard College undergraduate curriculum. Five-week program students can choose two courses from a variety of topics, while one-week program participants focus on a single subject: writing, literature, or theatre.

Young Women's Leadership Institute
Barnard College has itself been a distinguished leader in the higher education of women since its founding in 1889, and Barnard has produced graduates who go on to extraordinary leadership roles in a wide range of fields. The Young Women’s Leadership Institute combines academic learning, skill building workshops, and student-run sessions to train young women leaders in an intensive one-week program.

Admissions
Admission is selective, and is based on strong high school records, recommendations, and a personal statement. Applications from students whose preparation may vary are welcome, especially if they reveal unusual talents and interests that can be further developed in this program.

A Summer in the City 5 out of 5 stars

Hi, my name is Megan Carr and I attended the one week Summer in New York City program in 2006 as a rising senior. I am now a sophomore at Barnard College and have been working in the Pre-College Programs Office for the past year. Going to school during the summer never sounds like a ton of fun. At Barnard's Summer in NYC program, even though you are taking college-level classes, it never really feels like work. The faculty is highly competent and very knowledgeable. Most have taught college-level courses before; some are even Barnard or Columbia professors. Each class takes multiple field trips throughout the city. I was in a course entitled “Creating Fantastic Fabulist Fiction,” taught by Melanie Fallon. During that one-week period, we not only learned what “fabulist fiction” is (think: ghost stories and fairy tales), but we wrote our own fabulist fiction stories. To get inspiration, Melanie took us to the Guggenheim Museum and to Gramercy Park, the only private park in Manhattan. Trips for other classes included music performances and plays. One of my friends was in the theater class that year and after a play, she got to meet Sandra Oh (now of “Grey’s Anatomy” fame) during a Q&A session that the teacher had set up. While there are classes and homework, the Summer in NYC program also wants students to enjoy and explore the city. There are many options each night for sightseeing and events in NYC. There are the requisite site-seeing trips like the Empire State Building and the Brooklyn Bridge, trips to Museums, trips to see movies, and usually once a week they have tickets to Broadway shows. I can’t speak from personal experience about the four week program or the Young Women’s Leadership Institution, but, working for Pre-College Program this summer, I’ve learned a more about them. One of the main features of the four week program is the Life After College Series that takes place every Wednesday. Instead of classes, students in the four-week program attend site-visits to different companies and organizations. Some of the past LAC visits have been to MTV, CNN, the ACLU, and The Wall Street Journal. The Young Women’s Leadership Institute is a one week program in which students attend class in the morning and work on projects in the afternoon. Some of the past projects have been a campaign to raise awareness for several organizations such as Amnesty International, conducting research on the college experience and producing a handout to help HS students with college planning, hosting an Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis Awareness Night to raise funds for ALS. Students also go on site visits and meet with Barnard alumnae at their workplaces. One final point: even though Barnard is a women’s college, the one and four-week Summer in NYC programs are co-ed programs! If you are looking for a program that academic ¬rigor in an exciting city, this is definitely the program for you.

PCP Programs 5 out of 5 stars

Reviewed by: dv318, 2008-11-30 15:06:40 (Modified: 2008-11-30 00:00:00)

After my sophomore year in high school, I decided to attend Barnard's One Week Pre-College Program (PCP). I was a little nervous about the whole thing, but it turned out to be an amazing experience. The class I had enrolled in was called "Creating Fantastic Fabulist Fiction." Our teacher, Melanie Fallon was beyond amazing; she showed us great works and many ways to improve our writing. I'd like to think that my writing today had a little to do with what I was shown at Barnard. Not only was the class unique and interesting, but I made friends that I still keep in touch with to this day (Ahem, BECKY AND MEGAN!) In addition to a great class, I got to explore NYC during the summer. I loved eating my Forbidden Broadway Sundae at Serendipity!! I loved the program so much, that I decided to take another class the following summer. If you want to take a wonderful class, explore the greatest city in the world, and meet new people, apply for the PCP program --- you will not be sorry. Though I am now a Manhattan College freshman (and loving it!) I still consider myself a Barnard girl :)

Experience NYC and College Life 5 out of 5 stars

When you're in high school, just thinking about all the different colleges that are out there seems like a daunting task. At Barnard's Pre-College Program, I got a great chance to get a taste of college life while only a raising senior in high school. Through the pre-college program (referred to as PCP), I got to take an amazing class on Fabulist (as in Fables, not a misspelling of Fabulous) Fiction, where we read great stories and got the chance to write our own short stories and discuss what we had read. Looking back at this class as a current college sophomore, the class was a great taste of what being in a college class would actually be like, with a small discussion section where we got to analyze and discuss different aspects of the short stories. Besides from the class, we got to live on campus, and experience first-hand what living in a residence hall would be like--from the dinning halls to showering with flip flops. If the college experience itself wasn't enough, there's all of New York City to explore! We were given ample time to explore the city on our own (I learned how to navigate the subway system on my own!) but were also led on excursions by fantastic RA's to shows, restaurants, and other great sights around the city. I would definitely recommend this program to high school students looking for a summer experience more exciting than your average sleep-away camp!
