DescriptionBack to top

At Mataponi, the girls need not be the best - they need only try their best. Our camp is geared toward developing each child's self-confidence, improving self-esteem, instilling a sense of values and appreciation for others and helping friendships flourish. Sportsmanship, generosity, care and concern guide our campers throughout the camp season and beyond.

Mataponi is situated in the southern part of Maine, in the town of Naples, on Sebago Lake which is 38 miles long and the second largest lake in the state. The camp has over a thousand feet of lakefront. Naples is approximately thirty miles from the Maine coastline with its many fine towns and beaches and the same distance from the White Mountains of New Hampshire, a popular recreational area in both winter and summer. The surrounding countryside is characterized by beautiful lakes and evergreen forests, and 2 hours from Boston.

Camp Mataponi was founded in 1910 as a traditional girls' camp. We have a total of 330 girls, each group having about 45 campers. The Juniors, our youngest group are girls between the ages of 7 and 9, first through third grade. The Middie, 10 and 11, fourth and fifth grade. Inters are 12 and 13, sixth and seventh grade. Subs are 14, eighth grade. Seniors are 15, ninth grade.

The living facilities are right on campus with enclosed showers, toilets, and sinks right in the cabins. Each group has a leader who acts as a Supervisor. It is this person that the counselor will directly resort to and can go for guidance and suggestions. The entire camp participates together in certain activities such as campfires, weekly barbecues, special events, dramatic presentations, and others.

The camp season is seven weeks long, beginning near the end of June. There is a seven day preseason orientation period prior to the campers' arrival. The campers come from all over the United States. Several come from other countries.
