Camp Moomba
Moomba" is an Australian Aboriginal word that means "join together to have fun" and forms our camp’s philosophy "Friends Together Having Fun." Camp Moomba is a community based on equality, friendship, and support.
Year after year campers and counselors from across Canada are reunited at camp, sharing smiles, laughter, stories, and fun.
The children who attend camp are all confronted by similar issues in their lives, many live in difficult socio-economic situations and are unable to afford a camp experience and for this reason the Western Canadian Pediatric AIDS Society (WCPAS) provides camp and all transportation at no cost to families.
By coming together each year they are able to find the type of support that can only come from understanding.
Our goal is for every camper to return home with increased self-esteem, a sense of belonging, and pride of achievement. We hope to create a safe and caring environment where kids can be themselves and where friendships flourish. In such an environment where the stigma of HIV does not exist, children are able to overcome many of the mental barriers to success and realize new goals and dreams.
We feel that the benefits from camp create healthier young adults and that these benefits not only extend into the campers’ everyday lives but also into adulthood.
