Camp SEA Lab offers day and residential camps that foster scientific understanding and stewardship of our coasts and oceans by exploring the dynamic marine environments here on the central coast.  Kids ages 8-17 can join us for adventures in whale watching, kayaking, snorkeling, learning to sail, developing leadership skills, building a deep water ROV, and more.  Financial aid is available for qualifying families.

DAY CAMPS

Flukes & Flippers
Discover the secrets of our finned ocean friends - whales, seals, and more! Campers will learn field identification skills aboard a whale watching vessel and seek out sea lions, seals and otters while kayaking in our local slough. We'll explore the unique adaptations these animals have to survive life in the sea. This experience allows campers to explore their curiosities about marine mammals in a fun and educational learning environment.

Between the Tides
What creatures live along the shoreline habitats of the Monterey Bay? Come join us to discover the wonderful world of the intertidal zone! Campers will get their hands wet while investigating many different sandy beach and rocky intertidal habitats, explore the beautiful coastline by kayak, and have exciting opportunities to discover what survives between the tides.

Surf'n Sand Safari
Surfs up! Spend the week catching the curl in Monterey Bay while campers learn to surf and explore the science of waves, tides and currents. Campers will receive lessons from experienced surf instructors as they hang ten along the coast. Investigate marine life, create a sand sculpture masterpiece, and take part in marine conservation activities that help preserve and protect our coastline. Campers must be able to swim.

Elkhorn Slough & You!
Enjoy the week exploring sloughs by foot and kayak to find its many hidden treasures! From large to small, many plants and animals have made Elkhorn Slough their home. Discover native species, investigate the microscopic world of plankton, experience up-close encounters with seals and sea lions, and help restore precious wetlands. The future of the slough is up to you!

Kelp Beds & Fish Heads
Ever wonder what mysteries lie beneath the waves? Discover the fascinating world of magnificent kelp forests, home to thousands of animals that rely upon the kelp for food, shelter, and survival. Come along and dive into this world by snorkel, explore the diversity of life found within, and embark on many underwater adventures that await you! Campers must be able to swim.

RESIDENTIAL CAMPS

Journey to the Abyss
Take a hands-on approach to learning about the deep sea environment we’ve just begun to explore! Delve into the mysterious realm of bioluminescent creatures that live in the Monterey Bay! Test your skills as you build and pilot a Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) equipped with underwater cameras. Come meet marine scientists who use ROVs to study the Monterey Canyon and discover new species encountered in the ocean’s depths.

Plankton Invasion
Ever wonder what forms of life exist in one drop of seawater? Join us to discover the world of drifting creatures that play a vital role in sustaining life in our fragile ocean ecosystems, and the microscopic algae that provide 50% of the oxygen to the planet. We’ll spend the week growing and investigating these tiny magnificent creatures. To top it off, we’ll search for krill blooms and the larger animals that survive on plankton while whale watching, kayaking, and surfing in Monterey Bay!

Girls Love ScienceJoin us for an exciting girls-only week exploring the dynamic marine environment of the central coast! This field-oriented, hands-on program will investigate a variety of marine ecosystems, including sandy beaches, rocky shores and the deep sea, while learning the impact human activities can have. Campers will have the unique opportunity to interact with women scientists who are studying various aspects of the ocean while becoming exposed to careers in science.

TEEN CAMPS 

Voyage Seaward
Climb aboard the Seaward, a classic 82' schooner, and make it your home while we sail along the magnificent Central California coastline! Sail from San Francisco Bay to Santa Cruz, and weather permitting, explore the unique Farallon Islands and discover the wonderful wildlife it has in store. During this 5 day/4 night sea-going adventure, under the guidance of a professional captain and crew, you will be challenged to become a team by learning to sail a traditional ship on a voyage to the sea. Upon departure on our ocean journey, you'll get your sea legs going by fully participating in all aspects of shipboard life - steering, navigating, standing watch, and helping in the galley. Your skills will grow as you develop confidence, teamwork, and leadership abilities!

Explore the majestic Big Sur coastline - field scientist style! You will have the unique opportunity to camp for the week under the stars and redwoods at Big Creek Marine Reserve. Learn to use essential research techniques as you practice the scientific method with experiments in the field. Build teamwork, communication and leadership skills through hands-on field projects. Kayak the coast, tidepool the shores and visit a marine research lab along the way. Learn to become better stewards of our magnificent marine sanctuary!

Girls Love Science Too
Teens - want to be a marine scientist? Join us in this girls-only week for an in depth exploration of marine science careers. Learn essential research techniques as you practice the scientific method in the field. We'll take to the sea on a research vessel engaging in real-life ocean experiments, and visit marine research facilities to study how threats such as oil spills, marine debris, and climate change affect our ocean. This field-oriented, hands-on program will promote personal action and stewardship in ocean conservation. Girls will gain lasting friendships and the college experience as they stay at the beautiful redwood campus of UCSC!
