A summer's experience at Camp Temagami will leave campers with a lifetime of memories. In our intimate setting, experienced staff help campers to develop self-reliance and confidence.
While learning the art of traditional canoe travel, campers gain an understanding of the importance of a balanced lifestyle and an appreciation for the Canadian wilderness. For the past 75 years, the camp has been a meeting place where the seeds of lasting friendships have been sown.
Self-confidence, well-being, teamwork, initiative - these are just a few of the benefits of a summer spent canoeing. At Camp Temagami we believe that canoe tripping can be a means to an end: through wilderness travel, our campers develop skills and values that will serve them well for the rest of their lives. The Camp Temagami canoe tripping philosophy is based on the conviction that wilderness should be respected and enjoyed. We emphasize the process of traveling comfortably through the landscape more than the challenge of achieving a destination. Each cabin group takes a trip appropriate to its age and experience, and campers are given many opportunities to learn wilderness skills, to explore their surroundings and simply to relax.
Our equipment mirrors our philosophy of traveling simply and skilfully through the wilderness. Our fleet of wood-canvas canoes reflects our appreciation of craftsmanship and our commitment to skill development. The rest of our outfit, made up of a mix of traditional and modern gear, supplies our staff and campers with the best available equipment.
Campers live in comfortable cabins situated around the camp's waterfront; each cabin group is made up of 6 to 8 campers and 2 to 4 staff. Cabin groups operate as distinct units that participate in their activities and go on canoe trips together. A wide range of supervised activities is available, including paddling, swimming, sailing, games, crafts and target sports. Additionally, campers spend time in camp learning about all aspects of wilderness camping and canoe tripping including map reading, paddling strokes, canoe safety, food preparation and meal planning. Free time is also provided to spend with friends and staff, or to use for personal reflection. Camp Temagami's staff have a wealth of experience both working with children and canoeing Canada's outdoors. The majority of our staff are professional educators who have chosen to work with us on their vacation - people who have the maturity, know-how and skill to ensure that every camper has an enjoyable and fulfilling experience. Safety is our staff's number one concern; all trips have certified water safety and first-aid trained staff. |
