Darlington Arts Center Cultural Summer Arts Camp
Summer Address:

Prepare for an adventure of arts and cultures. Explore the diversity throughout our world and learn about regional music, art, dance and drama. Darlington’s Cultural Summer Arts Camp 2011 continues to raise student’s awareness of the various cultures around our country and our connections around the globe.
Through lessons, games and projects taught by professional visual artists, musicians, dancers and actors, students will “travel” to places both familiar and unknown, and expand their understanding of local and global cultures through artistic exploration.
The campers will be divided into groups by age.
Full Day Arts Camps are daily, Monday-Friday from 9am-3pm. The cost per week is $275.
(Center closed Monday, July 4th resulting in a short week: July 5-8, Tues-Fri, cost of $220.)
Preschool Arts Camp (ages 3-5) is in the morning, 9:30am-Noon, and has three choices each week:
- 3 days/week: Mon/Wed/Fri $75/week*
- 2 days/week: Tues/Thurs $50/week
- 5 days/week: Mon-Fri $125/week*
All Preschoolers MUST be potty-trained!
* Center closed Monday, July 4th resulting in an adjusted Preschool schedule July 5-8: 2 days (Tues/Thurs or Wed/Fri) $50; 4 days (Tues-Fri) $100.
Extended Day Options are available for all ages.

new! Sibling Discounts are available for families with more than one child attending the same week of camp (do not have to be in the same age group). Each additional sibling will receive 5% off an equal or lower priced camp. Extended Day options are also eligible for the discount.

Darlington Arts Center's 2011 Cultural Summer Arts Camp
Each day the campers experience music, visual arts, dance and drama through projects related to that week’s theme. All instructors are professionals in their arts specialty.
June 20 – 24: Arts Around the World
Young campers are invited to kick off their summer with an introduction to cultures around the world. Through art, music, drama and dance, students will explore the arts of a different continent each day, and gain an appreciation world cultures.

June 20 – 24: Art Intensive Camp
Unleash your creativity during a weeklong exploration of the Visual Arts! Try different styles and media such as paint, graphite, clay, pastels and mixed media, while learning about artists and art movements. Students will discover their own strengths and develop technique while creating one-of-a-kind works of art.
Projects will differ from the July and August Art Intensive Camps.

June 20 – 24: Spanish Camp
Campers will enjoy a week-long immersion in the Spanish language in a fun, energetic environment. Concepts and vocabulary will be reinforced through the arts, including music, movement and dance, as well as crafts and games.

June 27 – July 1: Pioneering the Wild West
Saddle up and ride into the Wild West, where we’ll explore the cultures of Native Americans, Pioneers and Cowboys. Build totem poles, listen to the fiddle while learning songs about the wild frontier and learn to dance as the Pioneers did around their campfires.

July 5 – 8: Home to Philadelphia
What better place to celebrate the birthplace of Liberty than home in Philadelphia? Play some jazz, dance the “Philly Bop”, and act out a scene as a historical Philadelphia character. Philly is the home of over 3,000 public murals, so join your team in creating one this week!

July 11 – 15: Aloha, Hawaii!
Aloha! Cruise over to the Hawaiian Islands to learn about the rich culture alive in the Pacific. Take part in the famous hula and mela, acting out folk tales through movement and song. Build volcanoes, carve petroglyphs and play Hawaiian rhythm instruments!

July 18 – 22: Imagined Lands
Young campers will follow their imaginations this week to explore enchanting lands. Draw and paint magical creatures, then act them out in drama! Learn songs and dances, and then create your own!

July 18 – 22: Art Intensive Camp

July 25 – 29: Caribbean Culture
Feel the rhythm of the islands this week as you explore the arts of the Caribbean. Act out stories about pirates, create beats with percussion instruments as you learn Caribbean songs, and see how low you can go in the Limbo!

August 1 – 5: European Adventures
Rome, Paris, London – there is so much to explore across the Pond! Learn about the master painters from across Europe, discover the great musical and dancing styles that originated there, and act out some famous Shakespeare scenes.

August 8 – 12: Ancient Africa
Africa is one of the most diverse areas in the world. Get a taste of regional arts from all corners of the continent. Explore the rhythms of sub-Saharan African music and dance, create expressive masks and act out ancient stories.

August 15 – 19: South America
Wrap up your world travels with a voyage across South America. Listen to the samba and tango and learn to move to these popular dances! Jump into the arts of the indigenous people making your own maracas and pots!

August 22 – 26: Art Intensive Camp

August 22 – 26: Shakespeare Under the Sun Camp
In this drama intensive camp, take charge of all aspects of a theatre production. Teamwork will be stressed as you create scenery; design and create costumes, sound, music, and makeup; work as backstage crew; and, of course, ACT in some of the most famous scenes by the world’s best-loved playwright! Shakespearean vocal technique, textual analysis, and stage combat will be covered as well. The week will culminate with an al fresco performance under the trees (weather permitting; otherwise the performance will be indoors)!
