Hopper Day Camp offers children a variety of activities ranging from traditional sports, art, drama, and music camp programs to nature club and community service activities to fun and educational electives such as Dr. Hoppers Mad Science Lab, The Secret Lives of Dinosaurs, and Artists and Their Work.
Students will be divided into groups by age, and half day options will be available for the youngest campers. Experienced teachers will introduce campers to new and exciting skills and adventures each week. Junior counselors will assist each age group.
Wednesday field trips and Friday Fun days complement each weeks activities.
Hop-into-Math
Rising 3rd through 5th Graders
Math has never been this much fun before!
GDS offers two weeks of math fun and games this summer! Campers will learn to love math through games, group activities, cooking and art projects, and computer games. Far from being a review course, Hop-into-Math Camp previews upcoming math topics designed to build confidence and teach the fun and beauty of math.
Fridays will be Pizza Party Days to celebrate the presence of fractions in real life!
Calling Rising 6th to 8th Graders to AcademAction!
Academics in Action
Your middle school student wants to relax and have fun over the summer. You want to make sure that your child continues to learn and stays active. With GDSs Middle School AcademAction, you both get what you want!
This summer, learning will be fun and meaningful for GDSs Middle School Campers (rising 6th to 8th graders) as they discover academics in action. With AcademAction, students explore a variety of subjects through hands-on activities, field trips, and classroom lessons.
Each two-week session, campers will choose two major subjects to study in the morning and two minor subjects in the afternoons. Depending on the session, majors range from foreign languages and the History of Dance to Space Explorations, The 2008 Elections, and Spies Through History. Minor subjects range from yoga to basketball to art. Each Thursday, campers will go on a field trip associated with one of the major classes they are taking, and on the last day of each session, students will enjoy a Pizza Party.
High School Research Conference
For Rising 9th through Graduated 12th Graders
Taking Research Beyond the Classroom
The GDS High School Research Conference is specifically designed with motivated high school students in mind. For four weeks, High School Researchers will work with a faculty advisor in small groups of 4 to 6 to research one of several subjects through a combination of library, lab, interview, observational, experiential, and lecture-based research. The experience will culminate in a group research presentation and publication in the first volume of the GDS High School Research Journal.
Research will be supplemented with a variety of classes emphasizing the various aspects of the research process. At the end of the conference, students will receive letters summarizing the experience and the students participation in the research and conference, appropriate for inclusion in rsums and applications.
Researchers will travel with their group and Advisor by Metro to a variety of locations to conduct their research. Assuming no other afternoon program is planned as part of the conference, the GDS Gym will be open to participants on most afternoons from 2:15 to 3:00 pm.
Hopper Soccer
For Children in Rising 1st to 8th Grade
What do grasshoppers and soccer players have in common? Amazing strength and agility!
Hopper Soccer campers will learn the ins and outs of soccer as they build their own strength and agility under the guidance of GDSs very own soccer coaches.
Students will engage in a variety of drills, games, and activities aimed at preparing them to play soccer with friends, at school, and competitively.
Hopper Hoops Clinic
For Children in Rising 1st to 8th Grade
Students are in for a treat as they learn the finer points of the game and engage in drills designed to build their skill, energy, and enjoyment.
Hopper Hoops coaching staff includes trained coaches who have played basketball professionally around the world and who are eager to share their knowledge with the campers.
