What does it take to be a medical professional? Find out at Junior Medical Camp, HealthSpace’s weeklong day camps that explore the science behind medicine and health. Loaded with hands-on labs and fun activities, the camp is ideal for young people, grades 3-10, who are interested in learning about the human body, health and the practice of medicine. Campers discover the building blocks of life by constructing models of DNA molecules, extracting DNA from cells and engaging in activities that examine the human genome and heredity. They learn the basics of anatomy and biology through dissection of animal organs. They become disease detectives, practicing laboratory techniques used by microbiologists to identify bacteria and uncovering how infectious microorganisms are spread. They even learn about the immune system and medicines to learn about how the body fights disease. The highlight of the week takes place when campers are transformed into crime scene investigators. Using forensic science techniques—from fingerprinting to DNA coding—junior investigators analyze evidence from a mock crime scene to solve the mystery in this ‘whodunit’ case. For a glimpse at how science is applied in the real world, campers meet health professionals and observe them in their actual workplace during a tour of a local medical facility. Junior Medical Camps and Pre-Med Camp are held at The Cleveland Museum of Natural History and at Tri-C's west campus. Eight camps are scheduled for Summer 2007.
