Northern Alberta Sailing College
Summer Address:

Who Are We?
The Northern Alberta Sailing College is a non-profit organization that operates on Lake Wabamun from both the Wabamun Sailing Club the Edmonton Yacht Club.
No experience is necessary to take a course, but we also offer instruction for people with some experience, in advanced techniques, and racing skills. Every year, many children, teenagers and adults are trained by our carefully chosen Canadian Yachting Association Certified Instructors.
Instruction is designed to stress the fundamentals of sailing including the parts of a boat, the rigging and de-rigging of a boat, safety, the language of sailing, and the points and actions of controlling the boat, trimming the sails and docking.
Who is our Typical Student?
The Northern Alberta Sailing College offers programs that suit all abilities and ages, from 6 to 76 . Generally our participants have a desire to meet new people, experience the outdoors and enjoy life.
Children and Families
While the weeklong camps are directed toward children and youth on their summer holidays, parents are encouraged to join up as well. Combined with camping at a local campground sailing lessons can be a great family vacation.
Adults
The weekend courses tend to be more intensive and are more geared toward the adult learner who is looking for the convienience of a weekend activity.
What Kind Of Boats Are Used?
Northern Alberta Sailing College uses Mistral 404, Albacore, 420's and Optimist sailboats, chosen because they are stable, easy to maneuver and contain only simple, essential controls. NASC sailboats have a standard sloop rig and skills developed in these boats can easily be applied to other types of sailing craft. The stable 8 foot long Optimist will be the boat used to teach those under 125 pounds starting to sail and race.
What About Safety?
Safety is an important part of any on-water activity. You must be able to swim and supply your own MOT, Canadian Coast Guard or Canadian Fisheries & Oceans approved personal floatation device (lifejacket). Northern Alberta Sailing College has rescue/ coach boats, which will be on the water at all times during sailing lessons. All of our boats are equipped with safety gear as required by the Canadian Coast Guard.
