Poetry in Notions is a unique summer program for youth ages 12-16. This intensive creative writing program is for students who enjoy writing and performing their original poetry. Participants receive an audio CD of their poetry and perform in the community! A typical day begins with Warm-up Exercises to get the creative juices flowing. Next, the student participates in Poetry Seminar, lectures and discussions on the history of performance poetry, from African griots and European minstrels to present day. The student's skills will flourish in Poetry Workshop, daily time devoted to creative writing, revising and peer-critique. Each day ends with Focused Free Writing sessions to develop impromptu performance poetry techniques. In addition, students benefit from weekly enrichment activities, including Performance Workshop, Current Event Discussions and Integrated Arts-time committed to exploring other creative arts.
