Spectra Academy
Summer Address:

This is a new program for children and adolescents with Aspergers disorder, high functioning autism and those with related social pragmatic difficulties aged 8-14. Children in this spectrum need an environment where they have to learn certain skills in order to function more competently with their peers. These skills are social interaction skills, self-control of inappropriate of behaviors, planning skills. Although they might be academically advanced, they have to be taught social skills systematically. One scientifically proven method to modify their behavior is Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA). It is a way of systematic instruction and reinforcement procedures to teach functional life skills. Another method is role-playing/ theater/ video modeling. This program uses the consultation of a behaviorist and a speech therapist to utilize these methods. Since children in the spectrum can not socialize appropriately, regular summer camp is not a place where they can learn and have fun, they often get isolated. The intent of this program is for them to get together with other peers, learn to be an appropriate friend with the supervision of young adults trained to teach them and be happy with their identity.
9:00- 12:00: Art or Drama
Art: The students will start the day with skills needed for greeting and starting a conversation. Positive reinforcement is emphasized within a supportive environment that encourages plenty of practice with same-aged peers. The progress is tracked to be reviewed by the weeks end. A non-competitive environment where kids will do art projects. Current project ideas are crafting action figures and producing an animation, During this program they will practice the social skills that they have learned.
Drama: Drama curriculum that focuses on teaching nonverbal language skills through the use of improvisation and other drama techniques. The program would target different aspects of dramatic technique divided into four individualized classes. One segment would provide practice with vocal inflection, volume control, rate and prosody through the art of comic characterizations. Movement classes would facilitate observation of other bodies in space and visual line of regard. The last two segments involve improvisational procedures where non-verbal aspects of communication are reinforced and role play where actual social/relational scenarios will be observed and enacted. A final class will be dedicated to a presentation of skits for parents.
12:00 -1:30: Outing
The intend is to decrease some of the inappropriate behaviors (such as talking, laughing out loud, asking silly questions etc.) , in a typical outing. The appropriate behavior will be demonstrated by the young adult supervisor. Then the kids will visit certain outings such as a restaurant, YMCA, or park with supervisors to practice these skills.
1:30- 2:00 Brief Review of daily goals/dismissal
At the end of each day, the supervisors review the positive behaviors demonstrated and reinforces that within the group. At the end of each week, we will meet with the parents to provide feedback on the weekly session and give suggestions as to how the parents can assist in generalizing the targeted skills in their childs day to day activities.
