Type of Programs: Political education and leadership training; English as a second language with American culture

Program Offerings International Leadership Program:

The International Leadership Program will expose students to the many issues confronting the world today while helping them to strengthen their leadership skills. Students will spend four weeks learning about international relations, the US government, public policy, and various global challenges. Students will go behind the scenes to learn how different governmental and non-governmental organizations work, meet with policy experts, political leaders, and historians to discuss global problems, and eventually develop their own plans about new ways to address these challenges. Students will also work to develop their own leadership skills, including communication and public speaking, conflict resolution, team building, group dynamics, and management techniques. The program is intensive and hands-on.

St. Timothy’s close proximity to Washington DC allows students to regularly visit and meet with foreign policy experts, government leaders, foreign-service workers, news correspondents, and other important figures in world politics. Students will be involved in simulations, case studies, research, seminar discussions and lectures led by both St. Timothy's faculty and outside experts. Academic sessions will run from Monday to Saturday. Sundays will be a time for relaxing, recreation, and visits to area attractions.

Intensive English Language Program

The Intensive English Language Program is a four-week ESL program stressing the academic skills of reading, writing, and speaking and listening. Students will also be involved in an American Culture course, which emphasizes an experiential approach to American culture. This intensive program will strengthen students' practical English skills, help them gain an appreciation of US history and culture, and prepare them for the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) exam. Students will be placed into three instructional groups based upon the results of a Secondary Level English Proficiency (SLEP) test and oral interviews. The groups consist of Basic proficiency (limited exposure to previous English instruction), Intermediate proficiency (good comprehension and grammatical skills), and Advanced proficiency (a strong capability with the English language requiring polishing in idioms, conversation styles and formal writing).

Students will spend time in three different instructional classes five mornings a week. These consist of: Reading, Writing, and Speaking and Listening. Two afternoons a week and all day on Saturday, students will spend their time in the American Culture class. Students in American Culture will spend most of their time learning about American history and culture via field trips to important American sites and cultural touchstones. Three afternoons a week, students will be involved in afternoon recreation and athletic programs. Sundays will include time for optional shopping trips, excursions to recreational and amusement sites, and other visits that take advantage of the beautiful Maryland countryside.
