Summer Address:

If you are thinking about going to college (and we hope you are), this program offers you an opportunity to take unique and academically challenging classes from college instructors while getting a preview of college life. You will also meet new people and have A LOT of fun. Additionally, participating in this program will be impressive on any college application and give you preferred consideration for applicable Shawnee State University scholarships.
Am I eligible to attend?
Applicants must be Ohio residents and rising tenth or eleventh grade students in academic year 2005-2006 (or current ninth or tenth grade students) who provide appropriate documentation of giftedness (according to Ohio Administrative Code 3301-51-15). Interested applicants should submit a completed application packet.
OK….How much?
The academic portion of the Institute and a daily lunch is free to any eligible and accepted student. Therefore, commuting students may attend at no charge. Commuting students have the option of engaging in the evening activities for a minimal fee. Students who plan to reside on campus must pay $275 per person for other meals and expenses, and includes a $50 deposit due after acceptance into the Institute. Financial assistance for residential costs is available and based upon need. Information about financial aid will be provided and applications should be submitted after acceptance into the Institute. The application form with criteria is posted on the website.
How do I apply?
Visit our website and download the Student Application Form and Student Eligibility Confirmation Form. You may also email or call and request for the forms to be sent to you. Both forms must be completed and submitted (or postmarked) to the address below no later than April 15, 2005. Fax transmittals will be accepted until April 15. Applications submitted after the deadline will be considered only if space is available.
Other Important Information
Housing and Meals
Summer Honors students reside in Campus Housing townhouses (Cedar House and/or University Townhouses) located adjacent to campus. All units are air-conditioned and offer 2-4 bedrooms, 2 full baths, a full kitchen, and a large furnished living/dining area. Each unit provides desks and beds for 4-8 residents, cable television service (TV not included), telephone service, and computer network access. ADA compliant facilities are available. Residential Advisors are employed to provide supervision and help ensure security of all students during the evening hours. The average RA-to-student ratio is 1:6, with no more than 1:8 for our larger townhouses.
Residential students are provided with breakfast, lunch, and dinner during their stay on campus. Students eat breakfast and lunch in the campus “Bears’ Den” cafeteria, which is set up as an all-you-can-eat buffet. Dinner is provided during evening activities and varies according. Visit the Shawnee State University website under Student Activities and Auxiliaries for more information about housing and food services.
Leisure and Recreation
Summer Honors Institute students adhere to a rigorous academic schedule with little “free time”, although we do provide structured, fun evening activities. During lunch and designated free time, students may visit the Internet Café or student lounge areas located in the University Center. Students also have access to the Clark Memorial Library. We can also accommodate students who wish to set aside time to run or exercise due to health or sports needs.
Evening Activities
Each evening, we will have an excursion or other activity planned for your enjoyment. These activities are required by all residential students and optional to commuting students. In most instances, these activities are fully funded through the grant and your residential fees. Examples of activities include trips to Ashland (KY) shopping mall and movie theatre, the local drive-in movie theatre, hiking at Shawnee State Park, mixer activities on campus, etc. More detailed information will be provided prior to arriving on campus.

The Summer Honors Institute is held for two separate weeklong sessions, with different courses offered during each session. The dates for each session are: Session I (July 17 – 22) and Session II (July 24 – 29). Typically, residential students arrive on campus on Sunday and depart on Friday. Commuting students may commute to campus for class Monday through Friday. Most students attend only one session per summer, although you are encouraged to apply for and attend more than one if you so desire. Review the enclosed “List of Courses” for more information about the courses we are offering this year.
