The non-profit youth Tall Ship training organization Toronto Brigantine Inc. offers a unique and exciting alternative to the traditional summer camp for teens through its core program, Tall Ship Adventures. An internationally acclaimed pioneer and innovator in the field of youth Sail Training, Toronto Brigantine and the Tall Ship Adventures program offer an unparalleled platform for adventure based youth programming. Tall Ship Adventures was founded in 1962 and operates two 72ft traditionally rigged sailing vessels. Each vessel has a crew of 10 experienced sailors and can accommodate 18 trainees (campers). We offer numerous courses during the summer, ranging from 9 -14 days in length. The boats sail to all corners of the Great Lakes and take in some of the most beautiful and pristine locales they have to offer. Living and working aboard a traditional square-rigged Tall Ship is a unique and compelling learning environment for the development of self-reliance, self esteem, teamwork, responsibility and leadership in young people. You can expect a fun, challenging atmosphere, and the memorable experience of sailing as part of the crew of a tall ship. You will sail day and night, and normally moor on every second or third day. During the day at sea there are training sessions, watch duty, and free time. Leisure activities include swimming, hikes, campfires and a variety of program specific sports. Shore leave may be given during port visits to explore and enjoy some local attractions. You'll learn traditional seamanship skills such as: setting and dousing sail, climbing aloft to furl the sails, tacking, gybing, shipboard terminology and procedures, knots, and helmsman-ship. To take part in a Tall Ship adventure you must be 13-18 years old, both physically and mentally fit, and be able to swim 100 meters and tred water for 10 min. We are dedicated to providing this opportunity to any individual interested in sailing on a Tall Ship, regardless of economic limitations. This is achieved through our bursary program which is designed to allow for universal access to our programming. The bursary is funded by private donations from individuals and organizations who feel strongly about the value of such training and its continuing availability to underprivileged youth.
