The Writers’ Express summer camp brings young people entering grades 5 to 9 out of the classroom and into sports, arts, and outdoor activities for a unique writing experience. While making masks, playing Ultimate Frisbee, and exploring some of Boston’s distinctive neighborhoods, campers discover the raw material for their daily writing exercises. We plan a wide range of experiences that spark their imaginations, provoke their opinions, and motivate them to express themselves clearly. Skilled writing teachers tailor their instruction through daily one-on-one conferences, written feedback, and drills in each camper’s journal. This individualized attention helps campers develop their personal writing voice and strengthen their mechanics. At the end of the program, each camper takes home a copy of The Writers’ Express Anthology– a collection of the campers’ polished pieces.
