W2 Community Media Arts Society is a Vancouver cultural institution dedicated to providing individuals and communities with access to technology, learning, production and distribution. W2 also operates creative spaces in Vancouver’s inner-city.
Our Creative Tech Summer Camps are a fun way for young people to participate in art making, learning new skills, creating the future, and making new friends. All workshops are taught by professional Vancouver artists, and are offered at affordable rates. *Additional subsidies available.
W2 is located in the historic Storyeum building across the street from the new Woodward’s complex, in the heart of Vancouver. W2’s partnership with Simon Fraser University School for Contemporary Arts equips our media lab with the most current technology.
Daily details: All camps run from 9:30am – 4pm, at W2 Storyeum, 151 West Cordova. If your child will be late, please phone. Healthy lunches are included in the summer camp fees.
Registration Info:
The Digital Witness Urban Native Youth Camp runs from 10-6. You must register through through Urban Native Youth Association Drop-In Centre.
*Additional Subsidies: All rates are already subsidized. Further subsidies are available to participants from lower income households, or households with exceptional circumstances that prevent participation in events due to financial reasons. Please see W2 Online Registration form to apply for this additional subsidy.

Creative Tech Boot Camp

A fun, week-long, mixed media exploration that introduces the fundamentals of traditional and contemporary art and technology.
Monday
Letterpress Workshop
Honey Mae
An Introduction to letterpress printmaking, this class will focus on learning the fundamentals. Students will participate in a series of projects to put those techniques to work. Make posters, cards, fine art books, and more! Honey Mae Caffin is W2’s own Letterpress artist and program coordinator.

PixelCount Portraits: Digital Photo
Week 1: Anne Marie Slater (Aug 10)
Week 2: Heiko Decosas (Aug 17)
A digital photography workshop a hands on approach to creating digital portraits and photos. This fast track overview will focus on the basics of digital and the fine art of photography and portraits. Enjoy producing some great photographs in historic Gastown. Anne Marie Slater is a photographer and producer of media arts projects that encourage social change and public engagement. Heiko Decosas is a multimedia producer and journalist, who works in documentary film making and webproduction.
Thursday
Street & Stencil Art
Indigo
Stencil art has quickly grown to encompass a wide-range of techniques and styles used to create artwork both on the street and in the gallery. This introductory workshop will teach students how to create their own stencils by hand, using images of their choice. By the end of the day, all participants will have completed a piece to take home. Indigo is a stencil artist based in Vancouver. Her work has appeared in art festivals, in galleries and on the street in Canada, the United States, the UK and Europe.
Wednesday & Friday
Short Film
Pia Massie
This two-day video workshop will teach students how to pitch films, create storyboards, shoot, edit, and produce. Participants will be introduced to short documentary, experimental or poetic films and interviews. On the last day of the camp, students will work in teams and create short films that they can take home. Pia Massie is a multi-media artist and educator. Her work has been shown in galleries around the world, and she has won a numner of film awards including the American Film Institute’s Independent Filmmaker award.

Digital Witness Film Camp
July 19-23 & 26-30

Cease Wyss and Alejandro Zuluaga.
Presented by the Urban Native Youth Drop-In Centre. Students of this filming and editing camp will work in teams and learn to shoot, edit and produce a short film or documentary. This will be non-fiction, digital story telling, focusing on Youth’s stories, Native Issues and Social Justice. Info & Registration: Please register through The Native Youth Drop in Centre. Abstract Motion

David Rimmer & Sammy Chien
This week long series of workshops will introduce and teach participants skills in New Media, Digital Culture, Abstract Motion Images (Painting on Film), Sound Art, and Digital Art concluding with the creation of a group video installation. David Rimmer is a national celebrated filmmaker and photographer. He is known as an exemplary craftsperson. Sammy Chien merges cinema, sound art, new media and dance performances techniques. His background is in experimental film, electroacoustic music and digital technology.
Open Music
Electronic Music Production

Creating electronic music on open source software! Participants will produce an album of their own music (LP) during this three-day workshop where they will make, mix and mend cool sounds. They will learn how to use a synthesizer, create songs, and produce sound effects using freeware. Vancouver based sound artist and producer, Jake Hardy, brings new mixes of sonic-pleasure to international audiences.
Sonik Youth
Electro Acoustic
August 16-18 (ages 10-13); August 23-25 (ages 14-18), $150
Kristen Roos
A fun introduction to sound art, acoustic ecology, electro-acoustic music. Learn recording and sound editing, with an emphasis on listening to the immediate environment using microphones and portable audio recorders and finally producing their own piece of sound collage or musique concrete. Students interact with site-specific sound art, acoustic ecology, sound-walks, sound mapping, and electro-acoustic music. Kristen Roos’ sound art is based on sound waves. He draws on history, urban and rural sound ecology to find new or hidden realities.
