The College of William and Mary
The second-oldest college in the nation, William and Mary is located in sunny and beautiful Williamsburg, Virginia. Campers will reside in fully air-conditioned freshman dorms and get a real college experience. Meals are provided by W&M dining services and the brand-new college recreation center will be open for student use. Williamsburg is a safe and historic town, home to attractions such as Colonial Williamsburg and Busch Gardens: Europe.
William and Mary Rowing Club
The William and Mary Rowing club was founded in 1985 at The College of William and Mary. We are the largest and most competitive club sport at the college, holding practices five times a week during the fall and spring semesters, and (generally) racing four times in the fall and five times in the spring all along the eastern seaboard. We practice at our own rowing site at the Chickahominy Riverfront Park, about 15 minutes away from campus. In the past two years, boats from our men’s and women’s team have medaled at the two most prestigious collegiate regattas in the nation: the Dad Vail regatta in Philadelphia and the Head of the Charles Regatta in Boston.
WHAT WE OFFER:
Coaching
The Head Varsity Coach of the William and Mary Rowing Team, Nathan Walker, will be the coach of both the boys’ and girls’ session of camp. Originally from the Chicago area, Coach Walker learned to row while attending college amongst the cows and cornfields of lovely Purdue University. While at Purdue, Nathan rowed for four years, earning two Most Valuable Oarsman awards and stroking the men’s V8 to a 2nd place finish his senior year at the Dad Vail Regatta. After graduating in 2005 with a degree in English Secondary Education, Nathan stuck around West Lafayette to become the novice men’s crew coach, leading his crews to medals at both SIRAs and Dad Vails. After his year spent coaching Purdue’s novice men, Nathan moved to Washington, D.C., where he continued coaching, working with masters women and recreational sweep rowers at Alexandria Community Rowing. While at ACR, Nathan coached his crews to medals at regattas far and wide. While continuing to coach at ACR, Nathan became the head coach of Fairfax High School, growing and leading the program to many victories. At the completion of the season, one of his boats was even voted All-Met by the Washington Post. Here at W&M, Coach Walker has vastly contributed to the growth and success of the program, including coaching the Women’s Varsity Four’s to medal at the Head of the Charles in fall 2008.
Training
W&M Rowing Camps offer an intense but fun opportunity for experienced high-school athletes to hone their skills and learn the skills needed to succeed as quality rowers. Learning in a college environment from a college coach will give teenage rowers a leg up on their peers as well as offer them an opportunity to learn from and grow with athletes from other rowing programs. Campers will use W&M’s fleet of well-tested Vespoli 8+ and 4+ shells during twice-daily practices. On Saturday, we will hold an inter-squad race to which friends and family are invited to see the progress their rower has made over the week. Of course, not every moment is spent on the water, and free time will also be spent exploring Colonial Williamsburg or playing Frisbee on the campus gardens. Although indoor training is not our main focus, campers will have access to our erg room and training equipment in the W&M Recreation Center.
