DescriptionBack to top

The Young Composers Program at CIM features classes in compositional craft, individual lessons with the faculty, sessions on notation and improvisation, and listening/discussion sessions about important musical repertoire of the past 40 years, as well as a visit to a rehearsal of the world-class Cleveland Orchestra at Severance Hall. Faculty includes Peter Gilbert, Orianna Webb, and featured guest composer Dr. Margaret Brouwer. The centerpiece of the program is the preparation, public performance, and CD recording of a work by each student. Each student will work with the YCP Ensemble (a professional group comprising cl, vln, vc, pno) to prepare the performance of his or her piece, with coaching from the faculty. Applicants aged 14-19 should submit application form, scores for 1 to 3 original works, at least 1 letter of recommendation, and their top three choices for instrumentation of the work to be performed at the program (within the given ensemble, including the full ensemble). Accepted composers will be assigned an instrumentation for their work to be performed at the program. For scores submitted with the application, works in
progress are acceptable, but at least 1 work must be complete. Please see program website for application form and complete instructions.
