Hartford, the home of Mark Twain, may be one of the oldest cities in the United States, but there is nothing outdated about this lovely and surprising city. Stroll through Bushnell Park, go tubing down Farmington River, or get an eye full of creatures from the deep at the Maritime Aquarium.

Take your child on a one-hundred-year-old carousel at Bushnell Park. This public park is one of the oldest in the country and includes a large pond with stainless steel sculptures, where kids can feed the ducks and grab an ice cream cone from one of the many food trucks. A great time to visit with the family is in February, when the park offers free ice skating and available lessons.

Go wild and tube down Farmington River. A 2.5 mile ride takes you and your family down the river with scenic views all along. Life jackets are provided and three rapids will keep the screams and thrills coming. The tubes are well-designed to keep everyone safe and there are plenty of chances to take a dip between the raging rapids. It's a great way to cool down in the summer and get to know the natural side of Hartford.

Educate yourself on the wonders of the deep at Mystic Aquarium, where multicolored fish and African penguins abound. Come face to face with the only Beluga whales in New England in the Arctic Coast exhibit. Visitors can watch these majestic creatures play, learn new behaviors, and can even choose to have an encounter with them. Be sure to check out Washed Ashore, an art exhibit made from trash found on the coast, where kids can learn the power and importance of conservation.
