South Carolina is said to be the birthplace of barbeque, but when you aren't busy stuffing your face, there is much to see and do. Enjoy tranquility in one of many state parks, explore an interactive museum, and go to some of the most popular beaches in the states with first-rate entertainment for all ages.

Immerse yourself and your children in the natural world at one of 47 state parks filled with forests, wildlife, and sweeping coastlines. Mount Mitchell State Park has the highest view east of the Mississippi, which overlooks the equally stunning Blue Mountains. The Upcountry of South Carolina is good for a short day-trip with the kids to go whitewater rafting, swim in lakes, and view gorgeous waterfalls. Then head to the historic downtown to enjoy music while you all eat a well-deserved bite.

Prepare to be busy at the Coastal Discovery Museum on Hilton Head Island, as you and your children wander in many trails, gardens, butterfly areas, and tree groves. Kids can go kayaking with a guide, learn how to throw a cast net to catch shrimp, or go on a beach discovery tour. The Children's Museum of the Upstate offers three floors of interactive experiences, including Start Your Engines, an exhibit that teaches about speed and friction, and of course, allows kids to drive a simulated race car.

Slather on your sunscreen and head to Myrtle Beach. Your family can try out many water sports, ranging from banana boat rides to parasailing. Once you've had enough of the sun, the city itself provides high-end shopping and hilarious musical shows, like the Good Vibrations and The Carolina Opry. Ripley's Believe It or Not Odditorium is full of bizarre collections sure to entertain the kids. Charleston, situated on the coast, is a city escape that offers historic forts, such as Fort Sumter, and plantations galore. Don't miss the Patriots Point Naval & Maritime Museum, a favorite attraction for those interested in walking in the footsteps of Heroes. Take a tour of the aircraft carrier USS Yorktown or the submarine USS Clamagore for a perfect experience for any budding pilot.
