University of Rhode Island Computer Camp

The Computer Camp began at the University of Rhode Island in the summer of 1998. This summer will be our twelth year in operation. At camp, students from ages 9 - 17 have a chance to learn about a variety of topics. A sampling of possible topics includes Microsoft Office programs, Internet usage, computer graphics, web page design, and computer programming.

The camp runs for seven weeks beginning on July 6th. Each of the one week sessions has a different topic and is specialized for a particular age group and ability level. All sessions begin at 9:00 am and end at 3:00 pm. Campers are taken to the Ram's Den cafeteria for lunch, where they have the option of purchasing a lunch. Younger campers are given the opportunity to play outside after lunch (older campers can play pool or video games back at the lab). All sessions are Monday - Friday and cost $250.

Camp instructors and assistants are URI undergraduates, graduate students, and alumni who have completed degrees in computer science or taken computer science courses. The staff-to-camper ratio is at least one staff member for every seven campers. We also have several veteran campers who serve as volunteers for most sessions of camp.

The philosophy of the camp is to create an atmosphere where children learn to use computers in conjunction with their interests and daily lives. This process coincides with gaining computer skills needed in today's society. We also hope to provide campers with the resources and knowledge necessary to continue their study and enjoyment of computers after camp is over.
