Young Women Writing for (a) Change (YWWC) cultivates communities where girls and teen-aged women can write and be heard. YWWC creative writing programs strengthen girls’ authentic voices and build emotional intelligence. YWWC classes are tuition based and held onsite at 6906 Plainfield Rd. in Cincinnati, Ohio. Programs include five weeklong summer writing programs. Since 1996, YWWC programs have served over 1000 girls and young women.
All Young Women Writing for (a) Change programs are designed to help strengthen girls' authentic voices, their ability to "speak out" through writing and in direct interaction, and their faith in their own creative intelligence. Specific goals include: helping girls enhance self-esteem, building skills in creative self-expression, learn to receive and give honest support and encouragement, developing skills in building and keeping community, and seeking and recognizing role models who inspire creative life choices.
Young women are supported in their writing through writing prompts, through conversations about writing and about being a young woman, and by participating in a “small group” of three or four peers where they can share their writing out loud and be heard.
Workshops are facilitated by women who have participated in Women Writing for (a) Change adult writing programs, most of whom are certified teachers, and all of whom use writing as an outlet, a means of connection, and a practice that sustains them. Workshops are also facilitated by older current and former program participants who work closely with participants in small and large groups.
