Hi everyone! Happy Fall to ya . . .

I have just signed on as administrative assistant to an ADD camp director (who is doing an EXCELLENT job BTW). I've managed to get his desk so that you can SEE a desk, now I need to reorganize his files.

Don't laugh!! I need to know how you file your stuff. SERIOUSLY!

We will use a category system, and the categories I have already are Facilities, Personnel, Campers, and Finances. I will file alphabetically under each category. What other categories have I missed?

BTW, his office is in his home with wife camp assistant and 2 homeschooled pre-teens. The office is a 10 x 12 room with a 10 x 12 office desk <g>, a copier, printer, shredder, 2 two drawer file cabinets, one metal double file rack (on wheels), two bookshelves and a dining table chair. Then there's all the boxes and piles under the desk and in every conceivable open space, including the dining table chair! I am an organizational freak with many years experience, but this is a real challenge! Every filing cabinet and file rack is packed full to the gills!

I told him I needed two more filing cabinets and cabinets on the walls. Hopefully, it will happen soon!

So, how do YOU handle your files and such? By the way, we are a year round Christian camp in the Appalachian foothills of Western NC.

Blessings Y'all!

Tracey your Camp Director is very lucky to have you.

I applaud you for taking the time to organize your files. The time you spend now at this seemingly overwhelming task will be a huge value to you and your camp director in the long run.

Over the past few years I have been using 3 ring binders more effectively then I ever had my files. For some reason those closed drawers have the "out of sight, out of mind" effect sometimes. Having a series of binders on a shelf, looking you in the face is a great way to make sure that you look through your information.

Of course, the one file that I still keep in a drawer is called my "Feel Good File." It is filled with thank you notes from parents and staff, drawings from campers and a few other random items that I never really knew where to put. Every once in a while I flip through it and choose one or two items to take out and read. It never ceases to amaze me how good it makes me feel to reconnect with these items.

If you created a feel good file for your camp director and put some things in there without him knowing, it would make a neat surprise. Of course, make sure you have a feel good file of your own so that you remember what a great job you are doing, too.
