Don't get tricked into buying uncertified belays

A friend of mine almost got tricked by the new company that has just entered US with their new “unique belay product”! He owns the rope course and was looking for a good belay deal. He trusted that the product was already operating somewhere in Australia, or New Zealand (I don’t remember where precisely). And he was about to do a downpayment of $500, without a guaranteed shipping date! He's lucky his insurance broker recommended him to check their international safety certification prior to purchasing the “super product”. And guess what?! There wasn’t any!!! Their excuse was that they are obtaining one SOME TIME SOON. My friend was getting even more suspicious and asked them if he could get a confirmed delivery date and they said that could not guarantee anything at the moment. It always surprises me how easily people fall for those things. I mean we are dealing with children here. And we are ready to trust some lousy promises that are not being backed up by THE SAFETY STANDARDS just because of the low price?! Please do not fall in this trap! At the moment there are only 2 types of officially certified belay devices in North America – 1) Hydraulic – Spectrum Sports and I think there's another company. 2) Centrifugal Brake – Only North Safety/SafeClimb Both systems have been in operation for many years with 0 recalls or accidents of rapid descend. Their descend speeds are accepted as safe. While the descend speed of this new belay device is TWICE AS HIGH! Do you think this is safe for children? The safety certification that you should look for is EN 341 or ASTM 24. EVETRYTHING THAT IS NOT CERTIFIED BY THOSE STANDARDS IS NOT APPROVED IN TERMS OF SAFETY! Please do not risk the lives and do not trust any promises until they are backed up by certification and years of successful operations!
