starting a new camp Quote | Reply

Hello all! I am considering starting a summer camp this summer. I have a masters in education, a BA in speech pathology, a college professor in child care training, and have worked for 17 years with children. Now, I've got my own children, and I want them to have a wonderful summer experience with peers, but I'm finding the options lacking. Last year, all of the camps around here filled up so fast!

Can you all recommend beginning steps to take, courses, books, and just general advice. I'm thinking of starting very small, maximum 30 children, limited age groups. I'm thinking of an educational experience as well as just general fun summer stuff kids love to do...

Thanks, in advance, for sharing your experience with me!

Lakelandkelly~

I would start by talking a local state park, or city park and run a day camp for a week or two there. Ideally you want it close to a swimming or water spot- kids like water in the summer!

This would get you your 30 or so kids- and less staff to find, won't have to worry about meals, it's a good starting point...And as each year is great- you can develop into a strong program and get a more permanent site..
