Countdown to Summer Fun

June signaled the coming of summer camp for my older brother and me. We could hardly wait for camp to start. The countdown ended on the day we headed off for a new summer of fun and friends. Our parents smiled benevolently, sharing in our excitement. They were happy to see their children enter a natural camp environment in the Canadian Shield, far away from the suburbs. They would miss us but enjoy their time together. They had their own countdown – to rekindle their relationship – free from daily parental concerns. For my parents, that freedom was made possible by the camp that supervised us. It had to be reputable, responsible, and capable. That was the dynamic between my parents, their kids, and the summer camp. My parents got a break by entrusting us to a reliable camp, and we took flight into an outdoor haven of summer activities and socializing. This triangle forced the camp into a vulnerable situation. Summer camps are unique businesses. They broker the separation of parents and children, insuring safety, structure, and recreation. Good camps – like other successful businesses – are organized. Summer camps have countdowns too – the expectation of a new season with eager kids and optimistic parents. That’s a great triangle. Let the countdown begin!
