This summer, imprinting everything from dog tags to fleece blankets, bike bottles, and bracelets are top sellers at camp stores. "Fun items with a camp's name give the kids something to take home and be proud of, and they also serve as a friendly reminder of the camp name," explains Bryan Kibler, US Camp Supply. Some camps enforce strict baggage limits. Most ACA-accredited camps do not allow cell phones/picture phones, iPODS, computers, video games, TVs, large boom boxes, electric fans, and hot pots or other electric appliances. "Consider what children, youth, and adults deal with today on a daily basis. We are subjected to a cacophony of noise from computers, cell phones, video games, iPods, and Palm Pilots; yet if you listen carefully, there is an unnerving silence," says Peg Smith, CEO of the American Camp Association. "In a world of wires, signals, and bandwidth, what can be more fundamental to positive human development than meaningful relationships with others and nature—rollicking groups of kids having fun at camp. The camp experience is human; humans together as they are meant to be—sharing, discovering, exploring, growing, and succeeding." This summer, camps are using new, high-tech ways to communicate with parents. Many camps post electronic newsletters, videos, and online photos on their Web sites to reassure Mom and Dad all is well.
