It's Beginning to Look a Lot Like Summer Camp Diversity

December 2008. 21st Century dilemmas arise; like how to recognize the special nature of winter celebrations in an era of incredible diversity. 'Happy Holidays' seems to be a popular approach or 'Seasons Greetings'. 'Merry Christmas & a Happy New Year's' is still number one. 'Happy Hanukkah' is upheld within the Jewish community. Greetings for Midwinter, Winter Solstice, the winter Dongzhi festival in China and others, compete with widely accepted forms. It's a diverse world and it's no longer possible to promote a dominate cultural norm. Minorities need equal representation. Summer camp reflects the growing diversity in global culture. Religion-based groups of all denominations are on the rise and camps abound without specific religious affiliations: teen travel camps, summer academic studies, computer camps, wilderness camps . . . a wide diversity of summer camps for kids with wide-ranging interests, coming from various family backgrounds. Diversity also predominates the hiring of summer camp staff. According to the ACA Trend Fact Sheet - In the past 10 years there has been an increase in the use of international staff to expose campers to different cultures. The only constant is the lack of a dominant camp culture. Diversity bodes well for those who embrace it. Still, the question remains, how to say it? How to wish the good will deserving at this time? How about: HAPPY DIVERSITY! Stephen Winbaum is the Communications Coordinator of MySummerCamps.com. ---
