Recession is not Concession for Summer Camp 2009

It’s sad to think that the Holiday Season of 2008 has been clouded by fears of recession – for the global economy and for summer camp enrolment. But, I still like what ACA CEO Peg Smith has said - "The last dollar a parent will cut is the dollar they spend on their kids." Still, with thousands of lay-offs and low consumer confidence, it depends where a parent’s last dollar ends. Summer camp's real estate is the key asset that will keep parents sending back their children. The natural surroundings of lakes, woods, and foot paths cannot be found anywhere else. It's a green education in a world where children are clamoring to commune with the environment. The 'natural' appeal of summer camp is far more fascinating to kids than Wii, TV, or hanging around the neighborhood with nothing to do. Also, there's the social bond of children and teens who have grown up together at summer camp, often for many years. If camp administrators maintain this community from 2008 through 2009 utilizing quality marketing – online and offline – then children will have a lot of power to convince parents where their last dollar is cut, and summer camp will not be where the buck stops.
