Any idea of camps past the Mississippi?! Quote | Reply

Greetings and Blessings!!

Hello, ya'll my name is Erin, currently I am a junior at the College of Mount Saint Joseph located in Cincinnati, Ohio. I am majoring in Religous Studies with a double minor in Ethics and Psychology, one of my main passion resides in Social Justice issues. Next fall I hope to study abroad and learn a lot more about Social Justice issues in different countries!

Anyway, this past summer I had an amazing experience working down in Cedar Mountain, North Carolina. I realized during the three months I was there that I truly love the outdoors and I want to go out west during this upcoming summer (which seems like forever and day away), if anyone has any insight on any good camps west of the Mississippi that would be if great value to me. Another huge passion of mine resides in being the outdoors and actively hiking. IF anyone has any leads as to what camp I should apply to for next summer, I am starting my search now.

As for anyone who hasn't experienced going away to camp for an extended period of time I truly recommend the idea, I've worked at two camps in the past four summers and each summer I find myself returning to camp year after year. Upon graduation in two years I don't know where I see myself headed, but I hope it has something to do with social justice, working in a camp, or something totally new that I'll experience!

Thanks so much!

Erin

If you're looking for a camp, I recommend totem girl scouts in Washington.
Camp Robbinswold is hands down the most beautiful camp I have ever attend. It's on Hood Canal and they get orcas going through and seal and the most beutiful sunrises you just would believe.

Hi Erin!

My name is Jessica. I'm a junior studying education and youth ministry at Lindenwood University in St. CHarles, MO. I was a camper at Camp Cedarledge in Pevely, MO, about 30 min. south of St. Louis, for 9 years (1994-2002). I was a staff member there the last three years (2003-2005) and I will be returning as a staff member this summer (I'm SO excited!). I don't know exactly what you're looking for in a camp to work at, but here is a small overview:

1. It's a GIrl Scout Camp that opened in 1927. The GSCGSL has 3 camps, and Cedarledge is the oldest and the largest (over 700 acres).

2. Girls in grades 2-12 can come for 1 week, 2 weeks, and 4 weeks. Only the oldest girls come for 4 weeks (though girls can come for more that one session). We offer programs in CIT (Counselor-in-Training), WIT (Wrangler-in-Training), RIT (Roughin' It, where the girls get to stay under the stars and cook their own meals every day), horse programs, arts and crafts program, sports programs, etc. We just started the different program area sessions the summer of 2004 and it's going great (though it was hard for an "old timer" like me to adjust!) We have roughly 300-450 girls in attendence every week.

3. In addition to their program's activities, girls do archery, swimming (every day), canoeing, horse back riding, sports, arts and crafts.

Speaking as a former camper AND a staff member, it's a fabulous place to grow up in. It was one of the only places I have ever felt so alive and so close to God. While we de get the homesick campers (who doesn't?) and the very weird, dependent campers (I once had a girl wake me up int he middle of the night 'cause she lost the back to her earring), it's a great place to work. Any questions, feel free to PM me. Or you can visit my website which is totally dedicated to my time as a CIT at Cedarledge: www.specklesonline.com

Love in Him,

Jessica
