| Riding counselors are responsible for teaching the fundamentals of western riding and horse care: how to mount, dismount, saddle, bridle, position hands and feet, seat, rein, and tie proper knots, along with etiquette and safety practices around horses. We teach limited English seat (older girls' units). Riding counselors will ride five days a week, with all day rides, combined half day rides, multi-day rides, and horse packing on mountain trails. Counselors are responsible for the planning and presentation of a horse show, showing off camper skills in various events, at the end of each term during parent weekend. Each of the eight camp units has a separate string of horses. Cheley owns 152 horses, along with full tack for each. We wear riding helmets, provided by the camp. There are two riding counselors per unit, plus a relief rider. |
