2010 LegaciesNow is providing over CAD 700,000 in grants to schools and school districts in British Columbia (BC) through its Explorations programme. These grants will allow students in 64 communities across the province to participate in summer camps in the areas of the arts and/or sport and recreation. The students from ages four (kindergarten) to 12 (grade seven) will be able to take part in either “ExplorArts”, which focuses on dance, drama, music, and/or the visual arts or in “Sport & Rec Explorations”, which is more focused on sport fitness and foundation movement instruction.

200 Schools
There are over 200 schools across BC, which will provide the safe, structured and affordable camps. One such school is Hastings-Tillicum Elementary Community School, an inner-city school in Vancouver, who thanks to Explorations received a grant of CAD 15,000 to run three camps for 60 students. All the applications for eligibility to the programme were reviewed by a selection panel of educators, arts specialists and recreation specialists, with priority being given to eligible applications in areas dealing with issues of access and equity.

Imagination And Discovery
Christy Hamlin of Hastings-Tillicum Elementary Community School commented on the grants: “Receiving this funding means we are able to provide high quality, educational art programs that inspire imagination and discovery to many children and families at a low cost.”

5000 Children
Marion Lay, President and CEO of 2010 LegaciesNow, believes that Explorations will “give over 5000 children the opportunity to be creative, become physically active and to learn new skills this summer”. The programme, which is being run in partnership with the Ministry of Education, is expected to be repeated and guidelines and application forms will be available on the 2010 LegaciesNow website (www.2010legaciesnow.com) in late October or early November.
