Kids Computer Camp
Date Added: 15-08-2005
For most the idea of going to camp for the summer means swimming and hiking and other outdoor activities. But at this camp the adventures are digital.
For the past five years digital adventures computer camps have been giving kids between the ages of 8-17 the opportunity to explore the world of web site and video game design. Digital adventures president Nevin Buconjic says the camps give the kids a chance to learn concepts they can’t learn in school.
It also gives them a chance to see if they would like to pursue a career in this area.
Camp instructor Sam Henderson is amazed by the young people’s abilities to grasp the concepts. He says their learning some of the same material he’s covered at his first year in college.
All of the students agree that the camps are fun and their learning a lot. 10 year old Christopher Mattalo thinks it neat that other kids might be playing games that he designed. MaeMae Fam-Ducharme is a returning student, last year she designed a web site and couldn’t remember the name of it so she’s returned to design another one. 9 year old Sophia Stone knew she wanted to join the camp when she brought home some information from school.
The camps are held in the new ICT centre located at Algoma University and are one week in length. There are still two sessions left, 3D Video Game Design (August 15-19) and First-person Game Development (August 22-26).
