HURON COUNTY — A small but eager group of artistic students grabbed the opportunity to expand their creative horizons this summer in a pilot program by a group of local artists who are passionate about sharing the wonders of art.

The Art Advocacy of Huron County recently reviewed the debut year of its Summer Art Camps and made plans for future camps. Based on the teachers' experiences with students at camp and the positive feedback from all of the parents, everyone agreed it was a colossal success. The Summer Art Camp, sponsored by the Pointe aux Barques Lighthouse Society, covered three school districts: Caseville, North Huron and Bad Axe. However, students in grades K-12 from any area were invited to participate — and did.

The program included six week-long camps in July and August. Each day of the camp had three-hour morning and afternoon sessions.

Art Advocacy and Thumb Arts Guild members Donna Martin of Caseville and Christy Eicher of Caseville taught students about various art mediums during the camps. Some subjects taught included scratch boarding, oil painting, acrylic painting and stained glass.

At the planning stage for the camp, Judy Valentine of Sand Point coordinated with all of the schools to see which ones would agree to open their doors for the camp at no cost.

"We needed to do something to make students and adults aware that almost everyone can do some form of art — you just need to find a niche," Valentine said. "The only way to find that niche is to try different forms of art."

She said the purpose of art isn't just to create interesting pictures and pieces. Art can expand a person's thinking in all areas.
