Life can be tough -- even lonely -- for people who have suffered brain injuries that impair their ability to speak, read, and write.

But a camp for aphasic patients and their families is trying to change that.

Last weekend's three-day retreat sponsored by Luther Midelfort was held in the idyllic setting of Camp Manitou in northern Chippewa County and offered aphasic patients and their families a unique chance to interact with a team of rehab specialists while having fun as well.

Aphasia affects a person's language skills and is usually caused by a brain injury but can also result from head trauma, brain tumors, or infections. It is commonly caused by a stroke and occurs particularly with older people.
