These are camps like no other — where the tall trees filter out the sounds of a busy world and where campers can find something more than bonfires and marshmallows.
They’re Christian camps and Dickson County is home to more of them than any other county in Tennessee, according to the Christian Camp and Conference Association (CCCA.)
From Vanleer to White Bluff to Burns and Dickson, there are six camps in the county and each one offers something unique.
“I don’t know why there are so many camps here,” said Ron Kyzer, co-director of Camp Ridgedale in Vanleer. Kyzer and his wife, Jo Ann, run the camp.
“Dickson County is a beautiful place,” he said. “We’ve got rolling hills and lots of trees.”
Those lush, rolling hills and trees that grow like giants are some of the things that attract church groups to the area. And, with Nashville only a short drive away, city dwellers don’t have to go far to find Mother Nature.
Christian camps cater to churches by hosting adult camps, youth camps and church retreats. The camps open up their wilderness to all dominations and by doing so, they become a form of ministry to people of all ages.
Some campers even find spiritual inspiration in the great outdoors.
