Conrad Boatworks AP Summer Boat Building Camp

This week-long class will introduce modern and classic boat building techniques through the build-out of two expedition wherries. Students will read texts on boat building and have hands on experience working on the expedition wherries. Intellectually curious students will also appreciate reading from the selection of texts that explore the metaphor of “the Boat” in literature, the philosophical treatment of rowing by George Pocock in the triumvirate of: Harmony, Balance, and Rhythm, and ocean rowing adventure stories.

One student a day will also receive a private sculling lesson in Washington Park from 6-8 pm on Monday through Thursday, then all four students can take part of a group paddle/row on Saturday from 10am – 2pm followed by a family picnic.

The camp is designed to be intellectually engaging and foster connection among friends through a shared project and shared water experience. After completing the course students will have a deeper understanding of the skills needed to complete building an expedition wherry rowing kit from Chesapeake Light Craft, the joy of rowing/paddling on the ocean, and the philosophical relevance of rowing in a life well lived.
