The Camp with Kids (and adults) that Really Surf! Jo Pickett and her family offer instruction based on decades of surfing experience. Jo is a personal fitness trainer at O2 Fitness Club at Mayfaire in Wilmington. The 2004 Surfing America Champion and 2006 ESA Easterns Champion and her staff will take you from Beginner to Competition skill levels. Operating Crystal South Surf Camp for twelve years, Jo and Ed Pickett have developed and refined a teaching method that focuses on safety, surfing fundamentals, skill development, surf etiquette, and ocean awareness. Situated at the south end of Wrightsville Beach, NC, at public access #39, Crystal South Surf Camp offers fun-filled mornings of surf lessons in an ocean environment ideally suited for beginner to intermediate levels. Attending five consecutive days, while not mandatory, provides the best results. Private lessons for individuals and small groups will be arranged by appointment. We can bring this Private Group experience directly to your beach house on Wrightsville Beach or Figure 8 Island .We can serve Topsail/Surf City, Carolina Beach, and Bald Head Island if the surf conditions are good for learning. Students learn basic surfing skills in five days such as paddling, catching waves, standing, balancing, and turning. Ed Pickett and his famous Beach Safety Lesson begins the week. Focusing on safety techniques, Ed uses role play on land to emphasize the importance of applying these safety techniques in the ocean. On land, students learn paddling form, and practice popups. As students progress each day, the beach lesson shortens, always reviewing safety skills, and students increase their surf time. Students learn to navigate through the shore break, paddle, and sit on their boards. Each instructor guides three students into waves, coaching the students through progressive skill exercises. Each day, students build upon the skills of the previous lessons, and soon learn to catch waves by themselves. Next comes the thrill of standing, balancing, turning, and linking turns. Some campers choose to spend several weeks per summer surfing with us, and return for following summers. Instructors expand the students’ foundation during consecutive weeks, teaching students how to properly execute turns and how to link maneuvers into a flowing dance that comprises surfing. We provide a safe atmosphere that builds community. Students practice and master progressive skills, connecting basic turns with advanced maneuvers to maximize wave performance and, of course, maximize FUN! No experience necessary. Wear a bathing suit, bring sunscreen and water, and a snack is optional. The Crystal South Surf Camp photos actually show us and our kids.
