On this 4-day voyage through the San Juans, 20 girls will join together with crew and women mentors to sail the 103-year-old schooner Adventuress, a National Historic Landmark and Puget Sound treasure.
This innovative program focuses on leadership development and encourages a love of STEM among young women as they sail through the San Juans and learn about the marine environment of Puget Sound. Past mentors have included a marine biologist, the executive director of Sound Experience (the nonprofit that sails Adventuress), and a tall ship sailor with over four decades of experience.
Girls will have the chance to haul lines, take the helm, keep Adventuress shipshape, and climb in the rigging. They will also have the chance learn about ocean acidification as they test the pH of Puget Sound water; tow for plankton and analyze samples under a microscope; and participate in citizen science by collecting water samples for a project on microplastics and marine debris.
