Since 1986 the SMARTS Summer Institute, the flagship program of the Southeastern Massachusetts Arts Collaborative, has offered young people a unique opportunity to work with some of New England’s finest artists as they explore and learn through process and performance in creative writing, dance, drama, film/video, instrumental, vocal and visual arts.
At SMARTS, learning takes place in a fun, joyous, effervescent, always inspired, collaborative atmosphere The creative work and arts training revolves around a unifying theme that provides fertile ground for collaborations between the arts disciplines and helps to foster a range of perspectives. SMARTS provides a stress-free, safe and nurturing environment where gentle mentors with impeccable artistic credentials guide, teach and inspire creative expression; where a child can discover their artist within and learn to trust their own vision and voice.
Recitals, the creation of outdoor community art works, one-minute musicals, final performances, literary magazines and social events are part of the creative electricity that takes place during this intensive 4-week immersion into the arts. Over 1200 people attend the Summer Institute’s recitals and performances.
