In 2002, Kelley Anderson taught guitar at the Rock ‘n’ Roll Camp for Girls in Portland, Oregon and was inspired to organize a similar camp for young women in the Southeast. As Chair of Women for Women and a student of the Recording Industry program at MTSU, Anderson saw a need for change in both the music industry and local music community. She organized the camp as a way to empower young women through music while giving them the tools needed to create positive social change. SGRRC began in 2003 as a project of the feminist student organization Women for Women and the June Anderson Women’s Center at Middle Tennessee State University. The first year was a huge success with over 70 campers attending and an overwhelmingly positive response from the community. SGRRC later expanded to serve young women in West Tennessee with a Memphis session of camp (now the Delta Girls Rock Camp). With the support of dozens of amazing volunteers, local sponsors, and bands, SGRRC intends to fulfill its mission year after year and continue to develop new ways for young women to develop self-confidence along with musical skills.
