Asthma Camp offers unique experience for kids.
Do you have an elementary student who suffers with asthma? If so, you might consider sending your youngster to summer camp at the Saint Joseph Mercy Health Exploration Station in Canton, located at 1600 South Canton Center Road. Amazing Asthma Camp is a week long camp for second through fifth graders with asthma that focuses on self-care, self-image, independence and the human body. It is the only day camp for children focusing on asthma in southeastern Michigan.
“Our goal with this camp is to improve the self-image of campers and to promote independence,” said Patti Bihn, certified asthma educator.
Each day of camp will focus on a different aspect of improving asthma management as well as a system of the body and how to keep it healthy in a very hands-on method. Areas covered include: what asthma is; personal triggers; medications; risk factors; self-management; bones and muscles; heart and lungs; brain and nerves; stomach and intestines; healthy eating, first aid and safety.
“This camp is very unique,” says Cheryl Phillips, camp coordinator. “The campers will have fun learning about their body, their disease and how to live a healthy and active life.”
The camp runs Monday, Aug. 13 through Friday, Aug. 17 from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day and the cost is $169 per camper. Camp includes: hands-on projects, dissections, outside activities, interactive games and two nutritious snacks each day. Each camper will also receive a peak flow meter, spacer with activity pack and an asthma action plan. In addition, there will be plenty of time for campers to explore the Health Exploration Station gallery.
“The gallery is like nothing you can imagine,” adds Phillips. “Kids can see real germs grow, crawl through a giant intestinal tract, learn about body systems, and literally see how asthma affect their lungs. It’s really a huge hit with kids.” The Saint Joseph Mercy Health Exploration Station is Michigan's first interactive health education center and one of only about 30 in the entire country.
Camp staff is comprised of certified asthma specialists and dynamic educators with diverse backgrounds in health education and related fields.
