1. THOR BAND FUNDAMENTALS: INTRODUCTION TO SONGWRITING, RECORDING, AND PERFORMING PROGRAM – (for beginner to intermediate students)

2013 SESSIONS:
JULY 8-19 – THOR Band/Demo Fundamentals
AUG 5-16 – THOR Band/Demo Fundamentals
There is limited availability in this program, so be sure to register as soon as you can to secure a spot!

This 2-week (weekdays 10am-4pm) intensive program focuses on the introduction to songwriting, song-crafting, multi-track recording, and performing. Students will form bands (complete with name, logo, style, vision) and exercises in songwriting will spark the band’s creativity to come up with a song which personifies their sound. Individual focus on each student’s instrument of choice will also be given, as well as serious attention to the art of performance (including lessons on the ways of the stage… amps, tuning, effects, pa, monitors, etc). Learning to listen, cooperate, and collaborate with other members of the band is an invaluable lesson in teamwork with practical applications far beyond music making.

Bands will then record demos of their song, and get first-hand lessons on how to use the leading multi-tracking studio software (ProTools), as well as overdubbing and mixing at Spin Studios, one of NYC’s top recording studios. The program will culminate with a performance in one of NYC’s top venues, where family and friends can come and see the break-out performances from the bands created in the program. Each participant leaves the program with a high-quality pro recording of their band’s song.

The directors’ experiences as professional touring and recording musicians will give priceless first-hand information on the whole process from the inception of the song, to the studio, to the stage – with music business knowledge thrown in.

The price for this two-week program is $1,000 per student, with a $300 deposit required upon registration to secure the studio time. There is limited availability in this program, so be sure to register as soon as you can to secure a spot! This program is for advanced-beginner to intermediate students.

2. THOR ADVANCED DEMO RECORDING PROGRAM – (for intermediate to advanced students)

2013 SESSION:
JULY 22-Aug 2 – Advanced Demo Recording
There is limited availability in this program, so be sure to register as soon as you can to secure a spot!

This 2-week (weekdays 10am-4pm) intensive program, run by Tomato (with special help from professional musicians/industry folk), focuses on song writing, crafting, arrangement, and production. The program culminates in a high quality demo recording in one of NYC’s top studios… this year we will be going into Spin Studios, a great studio where many top acts (from rock to metal to jazz to pop) have recorded… and students will be recording on Dr Dre’s board from the 90′s, so you know the sound will be amazing! The first part of the program is comprised of workshops on song-writing, song-crafting, and pre-production at THOR. Then, participants move to Spin Studios, where they will be working with the studio’s main engineer, on multi-tracking a demo recording and learning about what it takes to produce a professional recording in a pro studio, as well as engineering and mixing. Each participant leaves the program with a high-quality pro-demo. If you already have a band, great! But it is not required that you already have a band put together for the program, we will match you up with like-minded players who are at your level.

AGE & REQUIREMENTS
We will accept basic beginner ages (5-8), but mostly it is about the student’s interest in being creative, making music, and art. There is no requirement for the student to have played a musical instrument before (if they have it will just be a plus); But we have methods for getting all students playing the basics of the various instruments (guitars, drums, keyboards, vocals).

MISSION
The program will consist of teaching the basic fundamentals of working musically in a group together, first in rhythm and melody, and then working towards the goal of making music together as an ensemble, where each student plays a different instrument/role. Another important aspect of the program is to work on growing each individual student’s creativity. To achieve this, the students will be writing their own simple songs and recording them on our equipment, allowing them to experience the creative process and be able to actually take home and listen to their creations. In addition, the students will create other forms of art with rock t-shirt creation, band logo/poster creation, performance, and even dance. To add to the flow of the day, there will also be plenty of outside time at the many local parks, movie time, and outdoor music listening and history lessons. The program will culminate in a mini-performance by the students for friends and family at the end of the session.

STAFF
The program will be taught by our awesome staff of professional musicians, who all currently work in the recording and touring world, and share their knowledge and experience. This includes musicians Stephanie Sanders, Joan Chew, and Chris “Tomato” Harfenist, who have successfully put on these types of programs in the past; as well as teachers like Ryan Thornton, who, in addition to being a working musician, teaches 2nd Grade at The Brooklyn Friends School.
