Encinitas, a Pacific coastline city, was recently named one of the 20 best surf towns in the world by National Geographic. It's easy to see why, as hanging out here brings you back to the 1960's, when the highway 101 beach culture thrived. Adrenaline loving kids won't have to look far to find something to get their blood pumping and the more relaxed kids can find many places to chill out and enjoy the sun, as Encinitas is the flower capital of the world. Spend all day at San Diego Botanic Garden, which has the west coast's largest hands-on children's garden. Several programs are offered for children to enjoy such as the seeds of wonder which lets make arts and crafts in the garden or pot a plant for them to take home. Every month, there is a new scavenger hunt throughout the gardens and there's also a tree house and balsa wood fort to play pretend in. Find your way through a grass maze, make instruments from natural materials, or draw a picture in the art garden. The opportunities are endless! Children ages 2 and under are free.
Splash about in the sun at Moonlight State Beach, a wide and sandy beach that is perfect for young kids. Families can enjoy the day here with a picnic or go snorkeling, windsurfing, and fishing areas. Gather around the fire ring for a delicious s'more at or head to the snack bar for a beach treat. There's even a playground if the kids decide they'd like to play outside of the water.
Don't miss the Encinitas Fall Festival, fun for the whole family, with music and dance performances galore! There are over 450 booths and vendors to browse through and the kids might find that perfect Christmas present they've been hoping for. The family can dance along to music by popular, local bands and the kid’s zone has rides just for them! You can even bring the family dog to the Dog Park, where they'll enjoy plenty of turf to roam around and an agility course. After working up an appetite, grab a table and eat a meal from one of the vendors or the 40+ restaurants in the area.
