Located in the San Joaquin Valley of Northern California, the city of Merced is an enchanting place for families to roam and explore an abundance of natural wildlife phenomena. You and your child will delight in partaking in any number of the fun activities this community has to offer, such as a day on the water at Lake Yosemite, observing animals at the Applegate Zoo, or getting acquainted with the natural habitat of millions of migratory birds at the Merced National Wildlife Refuge. Check out our online directory for exciting camp opportunities in Merced!

Pack a picnic lunch, your swim trunks, and fishing gear for a fun-filled day at Lake Yosemite. Those looking for excitement won't be disappointed; with barbecue grills, boat rentals, and a beach for swimming, there’s no shortage of activities for the entire family to enjoy. Take a boat out for a relaxing afternoon of fishing, or engage in a more active day of paddle-boating, canoeing, and kayaking. If you’re looking to dry out, sit back and relax as you watch your children monkey around the playground.

The Applegate Zoo is unique in that much of the wildlife it features is native to California. Your family will have the unusual opportunity to observe mountain lions, black bears, bobcats, owls and more from a safe distance in the animals' homeland. However, those interested in international wildlife shouldn't be dismayed as you’ll also find animals from Australia and Nicaragua, including capuchin monkeys, black swans, and old tortoises. Check out the zoo's event page for seasonal activities such as the annual Zoo Boo, which allows kids to trick-or-treat among the animals!

If you or your child is an animal enthusiast and would prefer to take your family adventure into the wild, look no further than the Merced National Wildlife Refuge! Home of the largest contiguous freshwater wetlands in California, the refuge offers the opportunity to learn about the wetlands via a routed auto-tour and three different nature trails designed for optimal wildlife observation all year round. The hiking trails range from .5-1.5 miles, so kids and adults of all ages get to enjoy them!
