Home to some of the most resplendent deserts and gorgeous mountains in the United States, Nevada is a boon for family friendly activities. Gather up your backpacking gear and explore the national parks, dig into Nevada's cultural past and present, or study the railroads and art at one of the museums.
Make memories that will last a lifetime at Red Rock Canyon. This national conservation area features stunning deep red canyons just waiting for a family photo. Mountain bike or hike through 30 miles of trails, rock climb to your heart's content, or horseback ride around in style. With a 13-mile scenic drive and nearly 200,000 stunning acres of land, this is the perfect spot to view the Mojave Desert. If your kids are still looking for outdoor adventure, head over to Great Basin National Park, which has everything from 5,000 year old trees to rocky glaciers. Whether your family wants to study the night sky, tour the Lehman Caves, or camp under the moonlight, you'll have plenty of activities to fill the day.
Dive into Nevada's colorful culture by visiting Mark Twain's town of former residence, Carson City. Your kids will be fascinated learning about the history of his stay as he wrote some of America's most influential literature. If you're around in July, your little ones will love to attend the Silver State Stampede as well, which is the oldest rodeo in Nevada. Grab a bag of popcorn and watch everything from bull riding to steer wrestling and barrel racing. Children will enjoy the opportunity for horseback rides, and love picking out cowboy gear at the souvenir shop.
Dig into the past at the Nevada State Railroad Museum, where children 18 and under enter for free. This center preserves the railroad heritage of Nevada and allows your kids to ride one of the trolleys and check out some of the engines that were made famous in Hollywood films. If your little ones are looking for a creative outlet, whisk them off to the Nevada Museum of Art, where arts and crafts Saturdays are free for everyone ages three and up. Older kids may also be interested in enrolling in the E.L. Cord Museum School, which offers classes in everything from ceramics to photography. For other types of hands-on exploration, The Discovery Museum caters specifically to kids, with special events like museum camp-ins and discovery after dark.
