"Arrive a guest, leave a legend," so the saying goes in North Dakota. Surely by the time you leave, this state will feel like a second home and your time here will give you plenty of stories to tell everyone back home. Catch your dinner out on the lake with the family, enjoy watching the wonder in your kid's eyes when they see bison for the first time, and play pretend in one of many children's museums and spaces.
Gather up your fishing poles and hunker down at Devil's Lake, the largest natural lake in the state and famous for its fantasti fishing. Yellow perch and northern pike have been caught at two pounds and more. Speaking of legends, this lake has many about drowned warriors and lake monsters. Turtle River State Park provides a great spot for hiking, mountain biking, and even cross-country skiing in the winter. Further enjoy the beautiful valley and woods with an overnight stay in one of their rustic cabins.
Test your skills at the Children's Museum at Yunker Farm on their large USA puzzle, or learn how to become a bee and follow the queen bee's instructions. Kids will love relaxing in the book nook, eating food from around the world at the cafe, and looking at the garden shaped like the ABC's. Give kids the chance of a lifetime to see bison roaming free at Theodore Roosevelt National Park. Prairie dogs may even peek their heads out to say hello, so keep an eye out.
Located near the Missouri River Events Center is a brand-new space for children called The Treehouse. Kids can climb through the tree trunk among the foliage and then slide down into adventure. Watch your little one shop at the grocery store or grab a firefighter's jacket and take a seat in the fire engine. Find your heritage or learn about other history at The Scandinavian Heritage Park, where there are replicas of Sweden, Norway, Finland, Denmark, and Iceland. Let your kids be amazed by the 220+ year old cabin house that was disassembled, shipped and reassembled at the Scandinavian Heritage Park, giving it the title of the oldest building in North Dakota.
