Bangkok is a lively and bustling city known for its ancient temples and kingdoms, an active street life, and their elephant sanctuaries. The Chao Phraya River is backbone of this city as most of the floating markets can be found through the canals filled by this river. Any teenager would be mesmerized by all the glory Bangkok has to offer them for a summer.
Teenagers traveling to Bangkok with a summer abroad program will learn the history of the local people and their culture; all while going on epic hiking adventures and interacting with other campers from all over the world. If teenagers desire more thrills, they can enjoy a SCUBA class where they’ll experience the gorgeous coral reefs and underground playground.
Sites not to be missed while in Bangkok include the Grand Palace, as this is where Wat Phra Kaew, the Temple of Emerald Buddha lies, and has earned the title of most sacred in Thailand. Another temple on your list should be the Temple of Dawn or Wat Arun which is given the name after the Indian god of dawn. The best time to come see this temple is when the sun is about to set because you can watch it disappear behind the Wat Arun. The temple of the Reclining Buddha (Wat Pho) the remarkable floating markets should be noted as you’ll witness merchants glide through busy canals in canoes carrying fresh fruit and vegetables for sale. Grab a scoop of coconut ice cream as you shop through the canoes. Your summer program may include a day trip to Ayutthaya, Bangkok, as it was formerly the original capital of Thailand up until it collapsed after being invaded by the Burmese in the 1700’s.
