Issaquah is a Native American word for either snake, sound of birds, or little stream, so it makes sense that the city itself is a prime place to immerse yourself in nature and give the kids a chance to see animals in their natural habitats. It's also close to Seattle, making it a great base camp for adventure, and best of all, it's family friendly with clean air, water, and safe walking paths. Look at our online directory for Issaquah and find a summer camp that will be a whole new experience for your child.

Meet some very special animals at Fox Hollow Farm, a sanctuary for abused and/or abandoned animals. Farm days are Wednesday-Sunday and kids can ride a pony, drive a mini John Deere, hang out with the animals, and explore many playhouses. One of the best times to visit is springtime, when baby animals are being born and the organic garden is full of fruits and vegetables. On Easter, a huge Easter egg hunt is on, with over 30,000 candy-filled eggs! Afterwards, the kids can snuggle up with kittens, baby chicks, bunnies, and ducklings. You're sure to get a great family photo at Fox Hollow.

See fish coming home at the Friends of the Issaquah Salmon Hatchery. Fall is the best time to bring the family, as this is when the chinook salmon return and put on a show. Viewing windows and ladders let kids get right up next to the salmon as they jump up the ladder. There are also interactive exhibits, like an aquarium, the salmon life cycle, and an against the odds game. In the summer, kids ages 3-5 may attend Little Fry camp, which explores the hatchery and the nearby creek. Camp-goers can make animal tracks, become a salmon, and learn songs of the water.

Get wild at the Cougar Mountain Zoo, where animal walks, mini lectures, wildlife theater shows, and special activities based around reindeer, emus, lemurs, and tigers happen every day. Take a seat in the magic forest and take a photo with the largest bronze collection of any zoo in the world.  Kids will be introduced to unique wildlife that are danger of extinction. In December, the reindeer festival, with a large Siberian reindeer herd, runs all month and Santa even shows up! Other animal exhibits include, wolves, cranes, and macaws.
