Archaeology Summer Programs in Colorado
Science and adventure in Colorado, for students ages 12-18: Be part of an ongoing research project! At Crow Canyon’s one-week programs for middle school and high school students, you won’t just learn about archaeology—you’ll do it. Working alongside professional archaeologists, you’ll learn excavation techniques, dig at a real archaeological site (dating to AD 500–750), and work with artifacts in the lab. For students who want to immerse themselves in archaeology, Crow Canyon's High School Field School is a rare opportunity to do archaeology for three weeks at the pre-college level. Earn high school or college credit. Perfect for students exploring archaeology or anthropology as a college major—or a career!
Participants in all three programs try their hand at ancient technologies (spear-throwing with an atlatl, making fire without matches) and enjoy a special all-day tour of nearby Mesa Verde National Park. Not just about archaeology, Crow Canyon offers a unique enrichment experience that exposes students to scientific research, American Indian cultures, and a unique Western landscape and environment. Crow Canyon's 170-acre campus is located in the Four Corners region of the American Southwest, an area with one of the densest concentrations of well-preserved archaeological sites in the world. Crow Canyon’s current excavation, an ancestral Pueblo Indian site, is featured on the PBS archaeology reality show, Time Team America.
Middle school students must be at least 12 years old; high school students must be at least 14. Some scholarships are available, including scholarships for American Indian students.
Crow Canyon also offers adult archaeology summer programs for ages 18 and older: one-week Archaeology Research Program (excavation) sessions, a one-week Archaeology Lab Program, and special programs for educators.
